Rhythm Watch Co. (Rhythm Co., Ltd.)
A postwar Japanese clockmaker that grew into a major producer of clocks and movements, with a long partnership with Citizen.
A postwar start in Tokyo and Saitama
Rhythm traces its roots to Noson Tokei Seisakujo, a clock workshop set up in 1946, according to the company's corporate history. The company itself was established in 1950, with its head office in Tokyo and its factory in Saitama, north of the capital; its corporate profile gives the date as November 7, 1950.
In 1951, the company says, it released Japan's first domestically produced plastic-frame clock. It moved its headquarters to Ueno in Tokyo in 1955, listed its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1963, and built new factories at Mashiko in 1965 and Aizu in 1970.
The head office moved to Sumida-ku, Tokyo, in 1997 and to Omiya-ku, Saitama, in 2003, where it remains. The company describes itself as one of Japan's leading producers of clocks and clock movements, with more than 70 years of history as a clockmaker.
The Citizen connection
Rhythm's history is closely tied to Citizen. In 1953 it concluded technical, sales and capital tie-ups with Citizen Watch Co. and Citizen Trading Co., and in 1969 it signed an agreement with Citizen Watch for the mutual use of brand names.
That agreement matters to anyone trying to identify a clock, because it means the two companies could use each other's names. The company's English history does not say which clocks carried which name, so a Citizen-branded clock should not be assumed to be Rhythm-made, or the reverse, without other evidence.
Quartz, movements and radio clocks
Rhythm moved into quartz in the early 1970s. Its history records the release of a quartz clock in 1972, followed in 1973 by what it calls the world's first 4-MHz class crystal clock movement. In 1999 it introduced a series of radio-controlled clocks, which set themselves from broadcast time signals. The company also says that in 1972 it became the world's number-one clock manufacturer by production volume, a claim that comes from its own history.
Production spread overseas. Rhythm U.S.A. was set up in 1989, Hong Kong companies followed in 1990 and 1992 along with a factory in China, and a Vietnamese subsidiary was established in 2005, the same year Rhythm released its first clock carrying Japan's Eco Mark environmental label. The company's history also lists a new US subsidiary, Rhythm North America, Inc., established in 2025.
The current Japanese range on the company's consumer site includes the Lantern Clock series, character clocks, and a chiming wall clock made with the Wild Bird Society of Japan, which announces the time with the calls of 48 wild birds plus one secret call.
In the United States, Rhythm's product site says the company manufactures its own clocks and sells them only through authorized dealers, with a technical support FAQ for owners. It does not offer a dating guide, so the model number on the clock and the dealer who sold it are the most useful starting points.

Beyond clocks, and the 2020 rename
Rhythm has spread well beyond timekeeping. Its history lists a consumer service section and new subsidiaries in the late 1970s, sales of CCD cameras from 1988, medical device manufacturing from 2009 to 2019 at its Tohoku Rhythm unit, the purchase of PRITEC in 2016 and the formation of Rhythm Shoei in 2023 to take over the business of Shoei Co.
In 2020 three group companies, Rhythm Watch, Tohoku Rhythm and Rhythm Kyoshin, merged and the trade name changed to Rhythm Co., Ltd. The company now describes two main lines of business: precision parts such as molds for industrial customers, and clocks and other household products, which today include small fans and compact humidifiers.
